Yoyoko Ohtsuki ((おお)(つき) ヨヨコ Ōtsuki Yoyoko) is a supporting character from Bocchi the Rock! manga and anime series. She is in charge of the vocal and guitar of the band SIDEROS and is also its leader. She always looked up to Kikuri Hiroi and considers Kessoku Band as her band rival, and especially its lead guitarist Hitori Gotoh as her personal rival.

Appearance[]

Yoyoko has brown hair which is dip-dyed red and tied in pigtails. Her eyes are light red in color. She wears a beret and a black choker.

Personality[]

Yoyoko, despite her external appearance, has been very insecure and has a lousy communication style that makes it difficult for others to deal with her. While she already gained fame since being in SIDEROS that she can perform her own solo live, she still compares other people's achievements against her, feeling that she didn't do enough to surpass them. She likes to go karaoke alone, afraid that people would see and judge her singing. She also tends to measure people's followers by way of venue capacity to determine their popularity, for example, equating Kita's Isosta has 15,000 followers as equivalent to a Budokan.

Despite that, she also has been a considerate person, especially towards her sworn rival, Kessoku Band, she is willing to give tips for them to improve and succeed in Mikakunin Riot.

Relationship[]

Kikuri Hiroi[]

Yoyoko adores Kikuri Hiroi, which she called Nee-san (big sis) very much to the point she ignored all troubles caused by her and is willing to let her borrow the shower. She always yearns for her recognition in bands, and will be easily jealous with Kikuri if she mentioned other girls, such as Bocchi.

Kikuri in the other hand will always accept Yoyoko's offers and requests (as most of the time she is just too drunk to care), but in serious moments she does care about Yoyoko and her social behavior. The reason why Yoyoko could interact with Bocchi and the Kessoku Band was Kikuri setting them up as opening performance in SICK HACK Christmas Eve live.

Hitori Gotoh[]

Bocchi is Yoyoko's self-claimed rival, mainly because Kikuri recognised Bocchi more than Yoyoko that their first meeting was quite awkward. Bocchi's Guitar Hero views in OH!TUBE made her more insecure about Bocchi. However Bocchi does not know about this fact and thought that Yoyoko's rough response to her is just Yoyoko thinking Bocchi is a weird person.

However as they met more often, Yoyoko started to soft up to Bocchi and cooperated together in band practices together with other members, and even credited her presence as her source of motivation during her Mikakunin Riot speech. Despite that Bocchi and Yoyoko remain awkward when talking to each other.

Etymology[]

  • Yoyoko's surname Ohtsuki means "big" ( oo) and "zelkova tree" ( tsuki).

Trivia[]

  • Her name is derived from Moyoko Ohtsuki (大槻 モヨコ Ōtsuki Moyoko), which is an alias of Kenji Ohtsuki, a current member of Kinniku Shojo Tai.
    • He used this alias in his indie era. It is taken from Moyoko Kure (呉 モヨ子 Kure Moyoko), a female character from Kyūsaku Yumeno's novel Dogra Magra (ドグラ・マグラ).
    • He tweeted that he saw the Bocchi the Rock! anime and felt deep empathy.[1][2]
  • In the manga, her guitar of choice appears to be an Ibanez JEM model, more specifically, a JEMJRSP.[3]
  • Despite not having any proper roles in the initial anime adaptation nor is voiced, Yoyoko appears as a cameo in the opening sequence of the anime and a scene in Episode 10.
    • Her presence in the anime is also acknowledged in the -COMPLEX- guidebook by mentioning her full name and revealed her full body design, describing her as "a bandman in Shinjuku FOLT".
    • She is also featured as Episode 11 script cover, with her appearance is how she is in Chapter 26 in the manga.

Rough translation: It's still new year's holidays. I watched "Bocchi the Rock!", an anime in which a socially awkward high school student starts a band activity. I felt so much empathy. I've been through these all-bandsmen-can-relate things too. I think Hitori-chan may be the type who can be a good vocalist if she could invert her self-tormenting character.
