Bocchi the Rock![note 1] (ぼっち・ざ・ろっく! Bocchi za Rokku!) is an anime adaptation based on the manga of the same name. The anime series was produced by CloverWorks and premiered from October 9 to December 25, 2022. The anime can be watched on Crunchyroll worldwide and Bilibili Global in Southeast Asia.

A theater compilation was announced to be screened in spring 2024.

Plot[]

Hitori Gotoh, also known as "Bocchi-chan," is an extremely shy and insidious girl, who always says "Ah" at the beginning of her sentence.

She longed for a band activity that seemed to shine even for herself, but since, she had no friends, she decided to spend six hours a day in middle high school playing the guitar alone.

She noticed that was a delusion about posting a good guitar performance video on the internet as "guitarhero" or playing an active part at a school festival concert, instead of finding a band member, she was a high school student without making any friends!

One day, she was one step before hikikomori (shut-in), and one day she was called out by Nijika Ijichi, who is playing drums in "Kessoku Band", and that kind of daily life changes little by little.[3]

Production[]

Development and staff[]

Character designer and chief animation director Kerorira was originally a big fan of the manga and had been looking for information about the project since before it was chosen to work on it. Around June 2019, Kerorira went on a private outing with CloverWorks producer Shota Umehara and asked Umehara if an anime adaptation project was coming. Umehara called his boss, Yuichi Fukushima, an executive officer at CloverWorks, and found that Mikihiro Takayama, who belongs to the parent company Aniplex and is a big fan of the manga, had coincidentally brought a proposal to CloverWorks at the same time for an anime adaptation.[4][5]

The anime will be produced by two companies: Aniplex, which plans, advertises, produces, and produces music, and Houbunsha, which holds the rights to the manga and publishes it.[6]

Keiichiro Saito, who is directing his first anime series, was chosen at Kerorira's request, "I'd like to create a work of art with you." Umehara, who had a connection with the team through another work and knew their abilities, asked them to join the team. Umehara arranges the other team with consideration for the compatibility of each staff member and their schedules. Umehara had previously worked on Three Leaves, Three Colors, and other Kirara productions at his former studio, Doga Kobo, and staff members who worked with him during his time at Doga Kobo, such as Yoshiyuki Fujiwara, director of NEW GAME! and Engaged to the Unidentified. In addition, Jun Yamazaki, character designer for Three Leaves, Three Colors, and Yukiko Horiguchi, character designer for K-ON! also participated in the production of the opening key animation.[4][7]

The appointment of Erika Yoshida for the series composition and screenplay was proposed by Aniplex, and she wrote the script for all episodes.[4] The first manuscript of the first episode was completed on December 13, 2020.[8] She was introduced through a connection with Umehara in the anime film Love Me, Love Me Not, produced by A-1 Pictures, and Saito joined the project because he had seen the scripts for her previous works and wanted to use her.[4]

The concert director is Yusuke Kawakami, the action director for WONDER EGG PRIORITY produced by Umehara's team and storyboarded and directed the eighth episode of My Dress-Up Darling. Saki Takahashi, who worked on the character design for WONDER EGG PRIORITY, will participate in the sub-character design and plain clothes design cooperation. Other directors include Keisuke Shinohara, director of My Dress-Up Darling, Kazumasa Ishida, character designer, and Yusuke Yamamoto, character designer for the anime series, many of the directors, animation directors, animators, and other staff from the above two works participated in each episode number, and the production system is centered on young staff in their 20s and early 30s, including Saito, Kerorira, Kawakami, and other main staff, participating animators, and staff from each section. In contrast to animation production sites, which are usually disbanded after the completion of a single production, many of the staff members shared a common interest throughout the three productions, making it a site where they could work together strongly as a team.[9]

On the other hand, CloverWorks' in-house team is in charge of background art, color design and finishing (coloring), and photography processing. An in-house team led by Asuka Yokota and Yasunao Moriyasu, who were in charge of colors and art for Akebi's Sailor Uniform, handles colors and background art. The 3DCGI was done by Boundary, which does CG production for CloverWorks. The high rate of in-house production of finishing, art, photography, and computer graphics makes for easy collaboration on the production site.[10][11][12]

Acting and casting[]

Aki Hamazi, the author of the manga, also participated in the casting process, and when there were disagreements among the staff, the decision was based on Hamazi's opinion. In particular, the role of Kita was also subjected to a singing test, in which the actor was judged on both her Kita-ness and her singing ability.[4]

Yoshino Aoyama was cast as the main character, Hitori Gotoh.[13] Aoyama said that when she looked back on her school days, she realized that she used to be a shadowy character, and in her audition, she expressed her former self as she was, without much consciousness of creating the role as a shadowy character.[14] She also said that she enjoyed playing Hitori, as she felt that she could relate to many of the characters she has played in the past and that she was able to use her own experiences in the role.[14]

Ikumi Hasegawa, who plays Kita, is conscious of singing in a way that brings out the best of the music and the band, being aware that the song is about Kessoku Band, rather than expressing the role she played as she does when singing a character song. Therefore, the singer is conscious of the voice quality of the "girl who sings well in high school," a mixture of Hasegawa and Kita, and is more conscious of the tune and lyrics than of Kita's own personality. This is also made aware of the fact that even professional artists often have different vocal qualities in their everyday speaking and singing voice.[15]

Composition and direction[]

The manga-like deformed cuteness of the story is also emphasized, and from the second episode onward, the story diverges significantly from the daily lifeline that is characteristic of the Manga Time Kirara line of magazines, giving a glimpse into the personality of the work and expanding on the story and expression between the panels of a yonkoma manga. While there is a cartoonish expression in the variety of faces that collapse due to an overly introverted and imaginative approach, there is also a pursuit of realism and interesting movement, which is CloverWorks' forte. The use of live-action footage and other forms of expression that are not confined to the boundaries of animation are sought, leading to a production in which realism and deformation coexist.[16]

Saito and Yoshida controlled the content from the script stage, for example, by having the conversation of one character progress while the other was in the middle of their own world. The storyboarding process involves a close examination of each conversation to determine whether it is intended to be heard by the viewer or merely played as sound. In order to portray the momentum of the gags as an expression that can only be achieved in anime, while keeping in line with the manga, the content of the yonkoma was filled in in consultation with the original author and other publishers and added independently to make it work as an anime.[4]

In addition to the above, the opening and ending are designed so that the story can be told in a single episode, and the end of each episode is organized cohesively. Hamazi, the original author, supervised the design settings for character design, background art, musical instruments, etc., and participated in the composition and script meetings and post-recording for all episodes. While the design aspect is supervised in detail, there is no request for the composition or scenario from the original creator side, trusting the staff, except for sharing their opinions on the composition aspect, emphasizing "not to use expressions that demean something" and "not to create bad people," Hamazi is a consultant for the production of the anime, and basically supervises and produces the anime by answering questions from the staff. On the other hand, the music and the songs in the play are produced in close cooperation between Hamazi, Instant, the music supervisor of the manga, and Aniplex's music team, which is also deeply involved in the concert scenes described below. Hamazi checked the music in particular, and was present during demos, tentative songs, and vocal recordings, working closely with Instant and the production team to match her own image of the music with that of the artists.[4][17][18]

In the animation, Saito himself is a director with a background as an animator, so he pays particular attention to movement, and his policy is to express characterization strongly through layout, posing theatricality, and other visuals. Saito has four storyboards, and two directors, and directed the opening for this anime.[4] At Saito's insistence, Haruka Suzuki was chosen for the ending, and Suzuki's company, Pie in the sky, produced the animation.[19]

Character design[]

The character design was initially envisioned to have many lines and details, but Saito commissioned a design that emphasized movement as described above, and the design was set up to move boldly with few lines or color separations. This also helped to reduce the burden on animators. As for the design, it was designed based on the design at the beginning of the third volume of the manga, which was being serialized at the time of production.[4]

Kerorira has participated in all episodes as a key animator, in addition to character design and chief animation director. In particular, Kerorira was in charge of the key animation for the first episode, including the beginning of the anime, which was drawn to set the standard for the screen. Normally, the chief animation director supervises the key animation that has been corrected by the animation director in order to create a unified overall impression. However, in this anime, the policy of having each animator express his or her individuality and enriching the variations in the drawings was adopted by making the key animations by Kerorira the standard for all the animations, and by not forcing unification while sharing them throughout the entire production. Therefore, the individuality of the animators is retained during the revisions, and in some scenes, the characters are depicted with a different atmosphere on a dare. It is said that the number of scenes required for one episode of animation is approximately 300, and even animators who participate not only in one episode but in multiple episodes generally work on less than 100 scenes at most, whereas Kerorira alone worked on approximately 600 key animation scenes for all the episodes.[4]
