"Be Right There" (馳せサンズ Hase Sanzu) is the third episode of the anime series, Bocchi the Rock!. It premiered on October 23, 2022.

Synopsis[]

Rapid growth in communication skills after working part-time! She has nothing to do, and she can't talk to her classmates as well, so Bocchi is eating lunch at school today. She remembers Nijika, who is looking for a new member, and decides to approach Kita, who is popular and can play the guitar.[1]

Plot[]

It is Monday and Bocchi is feeling melancholy. Her sister Futari asks if Bocchi is happy to have recovered from her cold or prefers missing school but Bocchi says that missing school risks her being forgotten by her classmates. She feels sad about her situation, but then remembers that she is now in a band and working part-time at a club and is hopeful that she’s overcome her introversion and goes to school happily with her guitar, confident someone will talk to her.

However, as before, Bocchi is ignored by her classmates. She overhears two students discussing the band BAKWIMPS and loudly tries to join the conversation but can’t think of what to say and backs out.

Bocchi eats lunch alone, hiding under the stairs and crying, as she imagines that her classmates would call her a creep if she did talk to them. She thinks it best not to talk to them and daydreams about someday being a popular guitarist and impressing people with how much she has changed. She is interrupted by the sound of students talking above her and climbs a tower of tables to eavesdrop. She hears them mentioning that Kita sings well and used to play guitar in a band. Realizing Kita would be perfect to join Kessoku Band, Bocchi peers into the floor above to see what she looks like and is immediately intimidated by how pretty, athletic, and popular she is and goes back to hiding.

Bocchi builds up the courage to find Kita’s classroom, but is scared to talk to her. Kita notices her and asks if Bocchi is looking for someone. Bocchi tries to ask if Kita would be guitar/vocalist for her band, but her nerves prevent her from speaking properly and it sounds more like beatboxing. Kita awkwardly but kindly beatboxes back and Bocchi runs away embarrassed.

Hiding once more, Bocchi plays a mournful song on her guitar. After she finishes, Kita compliments her playing and reveals she followed Bocchi after she ran away. Although initially startled, Bocchi is delighted to receive praise and manages to ask if Kita would join her band. Kita declines and Bocchi tries to reassure her that the other members are cooler than she is, giving them fictitious party lifestyles, but Kita reveals she cannot actually play guitar, she only said she did in order to join a band to get close to her senpai but found it too difficult to learn by herself. She begs Bocchi to teach her so she can go back to her old band, Bocchi is terrified but cannot bring herself to say no and so agrees to teach her after work. Realizing they won’t live up to the party persona she described to Kita, Bocchi messages Nijika and Ryo, asking them to bring energy drinks and play EDM at work, which confuses them greatly.

Kita follows Bocchi on her way to work and nervously reveals that her last band was also in Shimokitazawa. Bocchi mentions the name of the live house and the band members and Kita freezes in fear, saying that is the one place she cannot go. At that moment, Nijika approaches, energy drinks in hand, and exclaims as she recognizes Kita as the runaway guitarist. Ryo also appears and Kita gets down on her knees and begs her for forgiveness.

They convene at the club and Kita confesses she cannot play the guitar. Ryo said they were worried when she went missing, and she assumed Kita had died. Kita is surprised they are not angry at her but Nijika blames herself for not realizing why Kita never turned up for practice and is happy since it meant Bocchi was able to join the band. Kita still wants to make it up to them and, at the manager's suggestion, agrees to help out at the club since it will be busy today.

Kita changes into a maid outfit and starts mopping the floor. Bocchi is worried that Kita is immediately better at work than she is and when Kita is assigned to working at reception (a job Bocchi was never trusted to do), Bocchi feels like she is losing her identity and hides in a trash can. She plays another sad song on her guitar – “The Elegy of the Part-Time Worker Who Lost Her Identity to the Just-Arrived Newbie" – and an end card illustration is shown as a joke that the series has ended.

Nijika brings Bocchi back to reality by asking her to show Kita how to do the drinks. Seeing this as a way to redeem herself, Bocchi demonstrates how to use the coffee machine but gets nervous from Kita’s intense gaze and ends up overfilling the cup and burning her hand. Kita bandages Bocchi’s hand with a handkerchief and Bocchi notices something about Kita’s fingertips. Kita asks why Bocchi wanted to join a band, Bocchi is too embarrassed to admit it was to become popular, so says she did it for world peace.

The venue opens and Bocchi and Kita continue their conversation between serving customers. Kita admits the senpai she joined the band to get closer to is Ryo, and she admires her greatly. She describes how she saw Ryo playing in a previous band and when Ryo dropped out and started recruiting for Kessoku Band she joined without thinking. Kita explains she wanted to be part of a truly close relationship, like a second family, which is something she lacked, Bocchi relates to this despite the stark differences in their social lives. However, Kita says this is all the more reason why she can’t join the band since it’s such an important bond and she already let them down before by running away.

Once work finishes, Kita says goodbye and wishes them luck with the band. Bocchi runs forward to try to stop her, tripping and pulling down a curtain as she does so, but explains to Kita that she also ran away before the concert. She noticed earlier how Kita had calluses on the fingertips of her left hand so they realize that Kita must be practicing the guitar a lot. Nijika invites Kita to join the band, saying she understands why Kita’s intimidated because she feels the same way and Bocchi also agrees. Ryo wants Kita to join because it means she then only has to pay a quarter of studio and quota fees. Nijika finds Ryo’s reasoning a bit harsh but Kita is delighted to be part of her Senpai’s quota. Kita agrees to join the band with Bocchi teaching her to play the guitar. Bocchi goes to leave but Nijika says she should stay because she’s today’s MVP. Kita mentions that despite her practice, her guitar never sounded right. After showing it, the other members tell her it’s a six-string bass and Kita faints in shock since she spent all her money on it.

The next day Bocchi starts her lessons with Kita. It is revealed that Ryo bought Kita’s bass and lent her a normal guitar. Kita is concerned that Ryo said that was all her money and she had to eat weeds from now, but hopes it was a joke. Kita struggles to play the F chord which reminds Bocchi of herself at the start. They play together until Ryo walks in while eating weeds, Bocchi is horrified but Kita loves how wild her senpai is.
